The CLEAR Framework: How We Build Marketing Strategy for Advisory Firms

Most advisory firms jump into marketing tactics before leadership agrees on the strategy. The CLEAR Framework is how we help firms get aligned first, then build a plan that works.
The CLEAR Framework: How We Build Marketing Strategy for Advisory Firms

Most advisory firms that come to us want help with something specific. They need a new website, more consistent content, better visibility in search, or a plan to reach a new kind of client. Those are all reasonable goals. But when we start asking questions, we usually find that the leadership team doesn't fully agree on where the firm is going or who it's trying to reach.

One partner wants to grow with business owners. Another sees the future in retirees. A third is mostly worried about whether the marketing budget is doing anything at all. None of them is wrong, but a plan built on top of those unspoken differences will struggle no matter how good the execution is.

That's why we created the CLEAR Framework. It's the strategy process we use with advisory firms before we build anything, and it gives leadership a structured way to get on the same page.

What CLEAR stands for

CLEAR is made up of five parts, and each one is a question the leadership team answers together.

Compass asks where the firm is headed over the next two to five years. This covers growth goals, succession plans, new offices or services, and what success would actually look like. Marketing should support the direction of the business, so this comes first.

Lens asks who the firm is trying to reach. We look at the client segments that matter most, what those people care about, and how they make decisions. A firm that tries to speak to everyone usually ends up sounding generic, so this step is about focus.

Edge asks why clients choose the firm and why they stay. Every firm says it offers personal service and comprehensive planning. The goal here is to find what's specific and true about your firm, often hidden in how your best client relationships started and why they have lasted.

Activation takes an honest look at how the firm shows up today. That includes the website, content, social channels, referral sources, compliance review, and whether anyone can actually see what's working. Many firms find that their current marketing doesn't reflect the answers they just gave in Compass, Lens, and Edge.

Roadmap brings it all together by asking what matters most. Each leader shares their top three priorities, one at a time, before any group discussion. That simple step brings hidden differences to the surface and shows where the group already agrees. From there, we can set priorities and decide how progress will be measured.

Why the conversation matters so much

The workshop itself is a structured conversation with every decision maker in the room. We ask direct questions and name differences out loud instead of smoothing them over. That can feel uncomfortable at times, but it's the most valuable part of the process.

Advisory firms are often led by partners who built the business together and know each other well. Over time, they stop discussing the big questions because everyone assumes they already agree. CLEAR creates space to test those assumptions. Sometimes the most useful moment comes when one leader hears another describe the ideal client in a completely different way and realizes they need to talk it through.

What happens after the workshop

Strategy only helps if it leads somewhere. Within 24 hours of the workshop, the firm receives its CLEAR Takeaways, a short summary of the five to ten themes that came out of the conversation. We ask every leader to read them closely and confirm that they reflect what was said and agreed on.

Only after leadership signs off do we build the CLEAR Scope. This is the plan for what to do next, which might include brand work, website updates, a content program, search and AI visibility improvements, or better reporting. Because the scope is tied directly to what leadership agreed on, every recommendation has a clear reason behind it.

Reporting is part of the plan from the start. Leaders consistently tell us they want to know what's working, so we build in real measures of progress tied to the goals in the Roadmap. That keeps the focus on results rather than activity.

Who CLEAR is for

CLEAR works best for advisory firms with more than one decision maker, such as partners, principals, or a leadership team. It's especially helpful for firms going through change, including a merger, a succession plan, a new office, or a shift in the clients they want to serve. It also helps firms that have tried marketing before without a clear strategy and want to make sure their next investment pays off.

Smaller practices can benefit too, but the real power of the framework shows up when several leaders need to agree on the same direction.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a CLEAR workshop?

A CLEAR workshop is a single focused session with the firm's leadership team. The exact length depends on the format and the number of leaders involved, and we share the details when we plan each workshop.

What does a firm receive after a CLEAR workshop?

Within 24 hours, the firm receives its CLEAR Takeaways, a summary of the key themes from the conversation. After leadership approves them, we build the CLEAR Scope, a recommended plan with priorities and measures of success.

Does a firm need to hire Dellosa & Co. after the workshop?

No. The workshop is designed to be valuable on its own. Many firms choose to continue working with us to carry out the plan, but the Takeaways belong to the firm either way.

‍

The Bottom Line

Good marketing starts with a leadership team that agrees on where the firm is going, who it serves, and why clients choose it. The CLEAR Framework gives advisory firms a clear way to get there. If you want to bring CLEAR to your leadership team, see how the workshop works.
